R. Kelly Asks For Sentence Commutation From Trump

Imprisoned R&B singer R. Kelly has formally submitted a clemency petition to President Donald Trump, requesting a commutation of his 30-year federal prison sentence for sex crimes.

According to records made public by the Department of Justice’s Office of the Pardon Attorney, the request is officially listed as “pending”. The petition, which was first reported by the Chicago Tribune, strictly seeks a reduction of his remaining prison term rather than a full presidential pardon.

The Basis of the Clemency Appeal

Kelly’s formal application follows a series of public maneuvers by his legal team to capture the White House’s attention. His lead attorney, Beau Brindley, has spent over a year advocating for the singer’s release, making public pleas directly to Trump.

The defense team has explicitly framed the appeal around allegations of institutional corruption and safety hazards within the federal prison system:

Alleged Assassination Plot: In previous emergency court motions, Kelly’s team included a sworn declaration from a terminally ill inmate who claimed federal prison staff offered him freedom in exchange for killing Kelly. Federal prosecutors have vehemently dismissed these claims, calling them “fanciful” and “repugnant”.

Interception of Mail: Brindley has accused federal prosecutors of orchestrating a conspiracy to intercept and steal Kelly’s legal correspondence to influence his convictions.

The 59-year-old singer is currently incarcerated at a federal correctional facility in North Carolina, with an expected release date in 2046.

While Trump historically utilized executive clemency powers to bypass the traditional DOJ review process for high-profile figures, it remains entirely unseen how the administration will handle a formal application regarding severe offenses against minors.

The Chicago-born Kelly’s shocking fall from grace came after he emerged in the early 1990s as the front man of the collaboration between Kelly and fellow Chicago artists Public Announcement. Their joint debut, Born into the 90’s, would reach platinum status on the strength of hits from the album such as “Honey Love” and “She’s Got That Vibe”. The success of the album helped open the door for Kelly stepping out as a successful solo artist.

R. Kelly has recorded 18 studio albums and has sold over 75 million records worldwide, including over 40 million albums in the U.S. His double-platinum double-disc R. is his best-selling release, surpassing 8 million U.S. copies. But troubles in his personal life ensnared Kelly, who has faced a number of allegations that would lead to his conviction on racketeering predicated on criminal conduct including sexual exploitation of children, forced labor and Mann Act violations. He would be sentenced to 30 years confinement in federal court.
