Tim Curry, the versatile and charismatic English actor whose career spanned theater, cinema, and music, has died. He was 80.
Curry passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles. Known for his booming voice and theatrical presence, he leaves behind an indelible mark on popular culture.
Born in Cheshire, England, Curry graduated from the University of Birmingham before joining the London cast of Hair in 1968.
His breakthrough came in 1973 when he originated the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show on stage. He reprised the role in the 1975 film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The film became the longest-running theatrical release in history, cementing Curry as a permanent cult cinema icon.
And, in a nod to his acting versatility, he terrified a generation in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It.

Versatility Across Genres
Curry avoided typecasting by moving effortlessly between comedy, horror, and family films. His most memorable roles include:
Wadsworth the Butler: He delivered a high-energy comedy performance in the 1985 classic Clue.
The Lord of Darkness: He underwent hours of prosthetic makeup for Ridley Scott’s dark fantasy Legend (1985).
Mr. Hector: He played the suspicious luxury hotel concierge in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992).
Broadway and Musical Success
Curry was also a powerhouse on Broadway, earning three Tony Award nominations. He was nominated for his performances in Amadeus (1980), My Favorite Year (1992), and for originating the role of King Arthur in the 2005 hit musical Spamalot.
As a musician, Curry released three rock albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, scoring a Billboard chart hit with the satirical single “I Do the Rock.”

Later Life and Enduring Impact
After suffering a major stroke in 2012, Curry used a wheelchair but remained active. He shifted his focus to voice acting, lending his distinctive baritone to dozens of animated series and video games. He also made frequent appearances at fan conventions worldwide. In 2025, he shared reflections on his life and nomadic childhood in his memoir, Vagabond.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. Curry leaves behind no immediate survivors: Curry never married and had no children but is mourned by millions of fans globally.
