Corey Ruiz (Corey Durell Ruiz) was a Black man in his 30s who was shot and killed by a Madison Police Department officer during a physical confrontation on Wednesday afternoon, July 22, 2026. The incident occurred in broad daylight at the busy intersection of Williamson Street (Willy Street) and Baldwin Street on Madison’s near-east side, sparking immediate outrage and widespread protests across the city.
The Incident
Date & Time: July 22, 2026, just before 1:00 PM.
Initial Call: Officers responded to reports of an individual attempting to enter or check parked vehicles.
The Escalation: According to police accounts, Ruiz fled on a bicycle before a physical struggle ensued with multiple officers.
According to eyewitnesses and viral social media videos, multiple police officers wrestled Ruiz to the ground, utilized a taser, and subsequently shot him at close range. Bystander accounts online report hearing three rapid gunshots during the struggle.
The Madison Police Department and Chief John Patterson stated that Ruiz resisted arrest and produced a “fixed blade knife,” injuring one of the officers before that officer discharged his weapon. However, some community members and onlookers who filmed the event claim they did not see Ruiz wielding a weapon while he was pinned to the ground.
