James L. “Mr. V” Virgil, the legendary entrepreneur often called the “Godfather of Atlanta Nightlife,” died on September 7, 2026, at the age of 85. His family announced his passing on Thursday, marking the end of an era for the city’s cultural and social history.
For years, Mr. V’s was synonymous with Atlanta’s “happening” Black entertainment scene. Atlanta historians will remember that Mr. V’s was one of Campbellton Road’s premier establishements during a time when Campbellton Road was a thriving corridor in the city.
Opening in 1978, the venue was a magnet for the era’s biggest stars, regularly hosting icons like Muhammad Ali, Tina Turner, Eddie Murphy, and Lionel Richie, while drawing up to 5,000 patrons every weekend.
“He was a generous, good-natured mentor,” said Atlanta City Councilmember Michael Julian Bond, who remembered Virgil as a foundational figure in the city’s business community.
Beyond the nightlife industry, Virgil was a dynamic businessman. He launched his own apparel line and later transitioned into the commercial sector, operating Mr. V’s Restaurant Supplies up until his death.
A public candlelight vigil to honor his life and legacy will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 3131 Campbellton Road SW, near the original site of his historic club.
