Atlanta Falcons Rule Out Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa In Opening Season Game At Pittsburgh: Cooper Rush Chosen To Start

The road ahead is already hitting a pothole for the hometown squad after the Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback situation took a dramatic and unexpected turn on Friday afternoon. Head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that newly named starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been ruled out for Sunday’s Week 1 season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tagovailoa, who joined the team this offseason, suffered an oblique injury during a routine throwing drill during Thursday’s practice. After sitting out Friday’s session, team doctors officially sidelined him for the opener. Stefanski noted that Tagovailoa is currently considered week-to-week, leaving his status for Week 2 and beyond up in the air.

The injury forces Atlanta into a precarious position under center, as Michael Penix Jr., who is entering his third season with the team, was already ruled out for Week 1 while continuing his rehabilitation from a torn ligament suffered in 2025. Veteran backup Cooper Rush will start for the Falcons on Sunday. Rush, who commanded all first-team reps during Thursday and Friday’s practices, brings valuable starting experience to an offense suddenly facing an elite Pittsburgh defense. Undrafted rookie Jack Strand will serve as the primary backup.

In addition to the quarterback shuffle, the Falcons will also be without safety Billy Bowman Jr. and offensive tackle Cameron Williams. Defensive end Za’Darius Smith remains a game-time decision, officially listed as questionable with a shoulder injury.
