The five-day, 24-hour convention officially opened its doors Thursday afternoon and will run continuously through Monday, September 7, 2026. Organizers expect upwards of 65,000 attendees to pack the “host hotel” campus—comprising the Hyatt Regency, Marriott Marquis, Hilton, Westin Peachtree Plaza, and the Courtland Grand—marking a massive economic and cultural milestone for the city.

A Milestone Forty Years in the Making

What began in 1987 as a single-hotel gathering of a few hundred fans has evolved into one of the largest multi-genre pop culture conventions in the world. This year’s landmark anniversary highlights four decades of community-driven fandom, spanning everything from literature and comic books to gaming, robotics, and world-class costuming.

Unlike traditional, corporate-owned conventions, Dragon Con remains uniquely fan-operated. This year, the convention has named Hope Atlanta as its official 2026 charity partner, aiming to raise significant funds to combat homelessness across the metropolitan area. The event also hosts its annual, massive Robert A. Heinlein “Pay It Forward” blood drive, routinely one of the largest single-site convention blood drives in the nation.

Parade to Main Street Tomorrow

The crown jewel of the weekend for local spectators, the annual Dragon Con Parade, is scheduled to march down Peachtree Street on Saturday, September 5 at 10:00 AM.

City officials are advising motorists to prepare for rolling road closures in the downtown sector tomorrow morning. The parade, which is free and open to the general public, will feature thousands of costumed participants showcasing months of intricate design work, ranging from classic cinematic monsters to towering high-tech mechs.

Navigating the Foot Traffic

With events split between the five host hotels and the sprawling exhibition floors at AmericasMart Buildings 2 and 3, downtown foot traffic is expected to remain heavy through Monday afternoon.

Con-goers are heavily utilizing the climate-controlled skybridges connecting the central hotels to navigate the programming tracks, while local transit officials are urging attendees to utilize the Peachtree Center MARTA station to mitigate vehicle gridlock. Registration and badge pickup remain centered at the Courtland Grand Hotel, with single-day and full-weekend passes driving steady lines.

As the 40th-anniversary festivities kick into high gear tonight, downtown Atlanta once again transforms into a vibrant epicenter of imagination, creativity, and retro-futurism.
