‘A Different World’ Reboots From Atlanta With Brand New & Prior Characters: The New Show Debuts On Sept. 26–The 39th Anniversary Of The Original Show’s Premiere On NBC

The official A Different World sequel series premieres on Netflix on September 24, 2026. This date marks the exact 39th anniversary of the original beloved sitcom’s debut on NBC. Shifting from the original multi-camera sitcom format into a modern, single-camera dramedy, the 10-episode first season follows a new generation of students at the fictional HBCU Hillman College.

Plot & Core Premise

The revival focuses on Deborah Wayne (played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon), the free-spirited, rebellious youngest daughter of the original series’ iconic couple, Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. As a freshman at her parents’ alma mater, Deborah attempts to navigate college life and carve out her own legacy while stepping out of the massive shadow left by her legendary parents.

Cast and Creative Team

The sequel successfully blends fresh new talent with a massive reunion of the original cast:

Returning Original Cast (OGs): Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert) and Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne) return alongside franchise favorites Cree Summer (Freddie Brooks), Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson), Charnele Brown (Kimberly Reese), Dawnn Lewis (Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor), Jada Pinkett Smith (Lena James), and Jenifer Lewis (Dean Davenport).

New Faces: The incoming Hillman class includes Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece, and Chibuikem Uche. Cliff “Method Man” Smith also joins the cast as Coach Coles.

Behind the Camera: Legendary director Debbie Allen, who served as the creative engine behind the original show, returns as an executive producer and directed the reboot’s premiere episode. Felicia Pride (Bel-Air, Grey’s Anatomy) serves as the head writer and showrunner, while original writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood return as executive producers.
