The Decatur City Commission is considering a sweeping measure to eliminate residential-only parking districts across the city. The proposal, which could phase out permits that currently protect resident street parking from commercial overflow, was brought to a work session at City Hall, according to Decaturish.
The parking discussion is part of a larger ongoing debate in Decatur. Earlier this year, the commission voted down a controversial proposal that would have updated and expanded the residential permit program to 37 streets, requiring residents to pay a $25 annual fee for permits enforced by an outside contractor. Following that rejection, officials are now weighing the complete elimination of these exclusive residential zones.
