6 Qualify To Fill The Unexpired Term of The Late Rep. David Scott’s Seat–Including 2 Republicans And Scott’s Daughter

A total of six people have qualified to run for the unexpired term of the late Rep. David Scott (D-Georgia), including 2 Republican and Scott’s daughter, Marcye Michelle Scott.

David Scott, the beloved 13th congressional representative, passed away April 22. He held the seat, which includes portions of East Point in Fulton county along with all of Rockdale County, and portions of Clayton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Henry, and Newton counties for more than two decades.

Scott was widely known for his Job Fairs and for helping constituents quietly behind the scenes.

The special election to fill Scott’s unexpired term will take place on Tuesday, July 28. If no candidate garners a majority (50 percent plus one) of the vote total, then a runoff election will take place Aug. 25.

The winner will serve the remaining months of Rep. Scott’s current term, which ends January 2027.

This election is not to be confused with the general election for this seat, which will take place in November. Subsequent to Scott’s passing, State Representative Jasmine Clark won the Democratic nomination for the seat and she will face Republican Jonathan Chavez in the general election. Clark is favorite to represent the heavily Democratic district.

Due to the contest being a special election, candidates from both parties are listed on the same ballot. And those candidates include Scott’s daughter, two Republicans, Fayth Elizabeth Park and Caesar Gonzalez, and Democrats Everton “EJ” Blair II, Tony Michael Brown and Carlos Eugene Moore.

Marcye Michelle Scott told local media that she had planned to run for the seat before her father’s passing, with the hope of succeeding him, before her father decided to run again. “Well, it was a no-brainer,” she said. “This has always been in the works.”

Blair, former head of the Gwinnett County School Board, was defeated by Clark in the primary election but also qualified to run in the special election, has promised to keep running. He was among the first well-known candidates to challenge the late Scott for the seat.

“This is my home district, and I’m committed to the district,” said Blair. “So when there’s another election that’s been put on the ballot, I’m gonna run for that too. I’m gonna run for every election.”
