A man utilizing a wheelchair was struck and killed by a bus in downtown Atlanta early Thursday morning, according to local authorities.
The fatal collision occurred at the busy intersection of Pryor Street and Memorial Drive. Emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after the incident was reported, but the victim succumbed to his injuries. Authorities noted that the victim was a one-legged man using a wheelchair.
As of Thursday afternoon, October 8, 2026, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the legal name or official identity of the victim.
However, investigators have made public a few key details about him: He was a 56-year-old male.
He had one leg and utilized a wheelchair.
According to community members who gathered at the crash site, he was known to frequently panhandle and stay in the immediate area.
Preliminary findings by the Atlanta Police Department indicate that investigators believe the man was crossing the street within a crosswalk against a red traffic signal when the oncoming bus collided with him.
Transit officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among the passengers riding inside the bus at the time of the crash.
The intersection remained partially closed for several hours Thursday morning as accident reconstruction teams mapped the scene and collected evidence. Investigators are currently reviewing traffic camera feeds and transit vehicle footage to piece together the exact sequence of events.
The medical examiner’s office is currently working to locate and formally notify his next of kin before his name is made public.
Additionally, police have clarified that the vehicle involved was a FlixBus operating a route from Orlando to Atlanta, rather than a local public transit bus. Law enforcement stated that the driver is not currently believed to be at fault.
The 56 year old man who died is at least the second disabled person to be struck and killed by a vehicle in Atlanta over the last 3 weeks.
Another Man In Wheelchair Struck, Killed 3 Weeks Prior In Atlanta
A 69-year-old U.S. Army veteran in a wheelchair was killed following a hit-and-run on Lee Street SW, leading to the recent arrest of a suspect.

The victim, Kim “Slim” Moss, was traveling southbound on August 4 when he was struck from behind by a Buick sedan. According to Atlanta police, the driver stopped for approximately 30 seconds before fleeing the scene. Moss was thrown into the roadway and died 10 days later at a local hospital.
Following a month-long investigation utilizing city surveillance and license plate reader cameras, authorities tracked down and arrested Isaiah Dumas in September. Dumas has been booked into the Fulton County Jail on multiple felony charges, including hit-and-run causing injury or death.
Dumas remains in jail on a combined $100,000 bond.
