Two Arrested After 22 Cats, 4 Dogs Rescued From Barnesville Home: Suspects Face Dozens Of Animal Cruelty Charges

Two individuals face dozens of criminal charges following a massive animal rescue operation at a Lamar County residence over the weekend.

Officials have not released the specific identities of the two individuals arrested or the exact nature of the living conditions inside the home; the names of the suspects and further details regarding the criminal charges remain withheld due to the ongoing investigation.

According to the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, county deputies acting alongside Lamar County Animal Services and code enforcement officers, executed a search warrant at a property on Bell Road. Upon entry, authorities discovered 26 animals living in severe neglect.

First responders rescued 22 cats and four dogs from the scene. Two suspects were arrested at the property. Each individual faces 26 counts of cruelty to animals, with additional charges currently pending as the investigation continues. Officials have withheld the names of the suspects due to the ongoing criminal case.

All 26 animals were transported to Lamar County Animal Services. Medical teams are currently conducting comprehensive veterinary assessments and providing treatment to the rescued dogs and cats.

The sudden influx of animals has forced the local shelter to alter its immediate operations. To accommodate the triage process and process required legal paperwork, the Lamar County Animal Services facility will remain closed to the public, volunteers, and visitors through Wednesday, August 19. The shelter plans to resume regular operations on Thursday, August 20.

Officials emphasized that because the 26 animals are active evidence in a criminal investigation, they are strictly unavailable for viewing, fostering, or adoption at this time.
