Forty years after the fictional Historically Black College first captured the hearts of television audiences, Hillman College opens its gates to a new generation. The highly anticipated A Different World sequel series premieres today on Netflix, dropping all 10 episodes of its freshman season for immediate streaming.
The new show debuts exactly 39 years to the day after the original series first aired on broadcast television, making a historic first in programming history.
The revival bridges decades of nostalgia with contemporary campus life, shifting the lens to a modern Gen Z student body while keeping the spirit of the original 1980s classic alive.

A New Generation at Hillman
The series follows Deborah Wayne (played by Maleah Joi Moon), the youngest daughter of the original show’s iconic couple, Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. After an unexpected mishap costs her an acceptance letter to NYU, Deborah finds herself charting a new path at her parents’ proud alma mater.
Joining Moon to round out the freshman class is a vibrant ensemble representing the modern HBCU experience:
Elite Roots: Cornell Young IV stars as Shaquille Johnson, an elite campus athlete and the son of original character Ron Johnson.
Freshman Ensemble: Alijah Kai, Kennedi Reece, Jordan Aaron Hall, and Chibuikem Uche round out the core group navigating the social and academic trials of modern university life.
Filmed In And Inspired By Atlanta
The original series was heavily inspired by Black college life in cities like Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. This time around, the filming is exclusively happening at real locations in Atlanta, specifically the city’s bevvy of HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges).
This provides a level of realism to the series, according to cast members who believe audiences will enjoy the experience
Returning Legends and New Icons
Fans of the original series will find plenty of reasons to tune in. Beloved original cast members Jasmine Guy (Whitley), Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne), Cree Summer (Freddie), Darryl M. Bell (Ron), Dawnn Lewis (Jaleesa), and Glynn Turman (Colonel Taylor) all return to reprise their roles, stepping into new chapters as established adults, trusted professors, and campus mentors.
Adding major star power to the Hillman universe are industry veterans Tichina Arnold and Cliff “Method Man” Smith, who join the cast as prominent fixtures of the college community.
The continuation is steered by showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride, alongside original series vanguard Debbie Allen, who returns as an executive producer to ensure the sequel retains the ground-breaking cultural authenticity of the original. In a nod to the show’s musical legacy, R&B icon Brandy lends her voice to a updated rendition of the legendary theme song.
Early reviews have praised the series as a bold, fun, and timely continuation that honors the past while fearlessly tackling the unique realities of today’s youth. The complete first season is available for streaming starting tonight.
