Kicker Tyler Loop split the uprights on a 56-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Baltimore Ravens to a thrilling 34-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at a packed Maracanã Stadium.
The historic matchup—the NFL’s first-ever game in Brazil—delivered a breathless finale in front of 72,792 fans, solidifying the league’s international expansion with an instant classic.
A Chaotic Final Minute
The game seemed destined for overtime after a frantic final sequence. Trailing by three, Dallas drove deep into Baltimore territory. A critical pass interference penalty initially set the Cowboys up at the Baltimore 2-yard line with 23 seconds remaining. However, a costly false start penalty backed Dallas up, forcing head coach Mike McCarthy to settle for a 23-yard Brandon Aubrey field goal to tie the game at 31-31.
With only seven seconds left on the clock after the ensuing kickoff, Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson refused to play for overtime.
Jackson took the snap, dropped back, and fired a 27-yard strike to wide receiver Zay Flowers across the middle of the field. Shaking off defenders, Flowers surged forward before the Ravens frantically called their final timeout with exactly one second remaining. Loop then marched onto the pitch and calmly drilled the 56-yard game-winner, sending the Baltimore sideline into a frenzy.
The finish was a welcome turnaround for a game in which the momentum seemed to be shifting in Dallas’ favor. Instead of a win though, the Cowboys were left stunned, shocked, and defeated as time expired.
Power vs. Air Attack
The contest lived up to its heavyweight billing, featuring a clash of offensive philosophies that kept the Rio crowd captivated:
The Ground Heavyweight: Derrick Henry anchored the Ravens’ offense, punishing the Dallas defensive front and punching in two rushing touchdowns.
The Aerial Fight: Dak Prescott kept the Cowboys competitive by exploiting the secondary, highlighted by a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jake Ferguson that catalyzed a second-half comeback.
With the victory, the Ravens climb to 2-1 on the season, finding their footing in a competitive AFC North. Meanwhile, the Cowboys head back to Texas at 1-2, left to rue a defensive lapse in the game’s final seven seconds.
