A Sunday evening family barbecue turned into a scene of devastating violence when gunfire erupted outside an apartment complex, leaving two young brothers dead and two other family members hospitalized.
The victims have been identified as 12-year-old Ja’hki Clark and 11-year-old Ja’marion Rolle.
According to the DeKalb County Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at an apartment complex on North Hairston Road.
The boys’ mother recounted the horrifying moments to local reporters, stating she found Ja’marion outside with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. She then discovered Ja’hki inside her dining room, where he had also been shot. He was rushed to a local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
The gunfire also struck two other relatives. A 19-year-old pregnant cousin was shot three times, and her 39-year-old mother was also wounded. Both women were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where they remain in stable condition awaiting surgery.
Investigators believe the tragedy stemmed from a dispute among children following a football game days prior. Family members stated that individuals connected to that earlier argument arrived at the apartment complex on Sunday. A physical altercation broke out and quickly escalated when someone drew a weapon and opened fire on the gathering.
The suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting. While the victims’ mother has provided investigators with video evidence of the fleeing suspects, authorities have not yet announced any arrests.
The loss and inexlpicable violence has sent shockwaves through the local school community. Ja’hki was a sixth-grade student at Stone Mountain Middle School, and Ja’marion was a fifth grader at Stone Mill Elementary School. The DeKalb County School District has deployed grief counselors to both campuses to support students and staff.
Anyone with information regarding this senseless shooting or the identities of the suspects is urged to contact the DeKalb County Police Department at 770-724-7910 or Crime Stoppers.
