Sir Sam Neill, the universally beloved New Zealand screen icon best known for playing paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, has died at the age of 78. Neill died today at a hospital in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

His family announced his passing, stating that he died suddenly and unexpectedly in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by loved ones. While Neill had openly battled stage-3 blood cancer since 2022, his family emphasized that he passed away entirely cancer-free after achieving full remission earlier this year.
In an emotional tribute shared on the actor’s official Instagram account on July 13, 2026, the whānau (family) of Sam Neill expressed their immeasurable loss.
“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
Neill had been highly candid about his health battle in recent years, documenting his stage-3 cancer diagnosis and grueling chemotherapy rounds in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?. Earlier in 2026, he had joyfully announced to fans that he was in full remission. His ultimate cause of death has not yet been specified by the family.
Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Northern Ireland in 1947, he moved to New Zealand at age seven and adopted the name “Sam” to combat a childhood stammer and reinvent himself. It was a transformation that laid the groundwork for an extraordinary career in film and television productions.
While global audiences loved him for dodging prehistoric predators in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park—a role he famously reprised as recently as 2022 in Jurassic World Dominion—Neill’s acting depth extended far beyond blockbuster cinema: While his full Internet Movie Database (IMDb) Profile lists nearly 80 feature film credits, his body of work spans close to 150 projects overall, ranging from indie dramas to major motion pictures, beginning with his first feature film, The City Of No, in 1971.
