A neighborhood homecoming celebration turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy early Sunday morning when gunfire erupted into a massive crowd, leaving two men dead and up to 35 other people injured.
The shooting occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m. on October 4, 2026, along Pine Street in Vienna, a small city in Dooly County, located in south-central Georgia. Local sheriff’s deputies were already in the area monitoring the unsanctioned homecoming block party, which authorities estimate had drawn a crowd of more than 1,000 people.
A Chaotic Crime Scene
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy reported that the shooting spanned at least two separate locations about a block apart. Gunmen reportedly opened fire directly into a crowd of at least 50 people who were gathered outside.
Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls confirmed that a 20-year-old man and a 23-year-old man died as a result of the gunfire. The identities of the deceased are being withheld at this time aas the investigation unfolds although the families of both young men have been notified.
Emergency medical services and private vehicles rushed the wounded to multiple regional hospitals. Officials stated that at least 25 victims are being treated for various injuries, with the total number of injured expected to rise as high as 35.
Authorities Appeal for Public Help
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been called in to assist in the active, ongoing investigation alongside local law enforcement. No suspects have been publicly identified, and a motive for the shooting remains unclear.
“We are asking for the community’s help,” Sheriff Peavy said, urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has cellphone video from the party to come forward.
