Fighting Mad: Memphis City Council Meeting Devolves Into Chaos: Yelling, Threats Are Leveled: Fight Breaks Out, Woman’s Wig Gets Snatched Off, As City Debates Data Center Expansion In The Area

A high-stakes Memphis City Council meeting degenerated into a scene reminiscent of the 1990s Jerry Springer Show as absolute chaos on Tuesday night, culminating in screaming matches between city leaders and a physical fistfight in the City Hall lobby that forced an abrupt adjournment.

The pandemonium erupted after council members voted to delay a highly anticipated final decision on a proposed data center development moratorium, pushing the vote to October 20. The decision instantly enraged a crowd of more than 100 residents who had packed the chambers to demand an immediate halt to local data center expansions, which many community activists have fiercely opposed due to environmental and infrastructure concerns.

Tempers Flare on the Council Floor

The tension inside the chamber quickly boiled over into shouting matches, not just among the audience, but between the council members themselves. A heated confrontation broke out involving Councilwoman Yolanda Cooper-Sutton, Councilman JB Smiley, and members of the audience.

As the arguments intensified, Cooper-Sutton had to be physically restrained and pulled away from the floor by security and staff, prompting the council chairperson to declare an immediate emergency recess.

Violence Spills Into the Lobby

As the meeting ground to a sudden halt, the outrage turned physical. While protesters inside the chamber chanted “no justice, no peace,” and, “You’re a sellout!” at councilmembers, a violent melee broke out just outside the doors.

Eyewitness video captured a chaotic scene in the City Hall lobby as multiple attendees engaged in a full-blown fistfight. Women were seen pulling hair, and pulling it off, as one woman was seen snatching another woman’s wig off and then hurling it around as a trophy.

Slaps and punches were thrown as some bystanders tried to intervene and others scrambled away for safety.

Law enforcement officers rushed into the lobby to break up the fighting and clear the building. Despite the violence, authorities reported no immediate injuries and made no arrests at the scene.

What’s Next

With the meeting forced into an early adjournment due to safety risks, all remaining agenda items were shelved. The controversial third and final vote on the data center moratorium has been officially rescheduled for Tuesday, October 20, 2026, setting the stage for another highly charged showdown at City Hall.
