Country Music Legend Willie Nelson Endorses Democrat James Talarico In Texas U.S. Senate Race

Country music icon Willie Nelson has officially endorsed Democratic State Representative James Talarico in his highly competitive bid for the U.S. Senate, shaking up one of the most closely watched political contests in the state.

In a campaign video released on October 8, 2026, the 93-year-old music legend, who was born in Abbott, Texas, sporting his signature red bandana, threw his full support behind the Austin-area lawmaker.

“I’ve gotten to know James Talarico,” Nelson said in the video message. “He’s a good man, who will be a good senator for the state of Texas. Please vote and vote for James Talarico.”

The endorsement marks a major high-profile boost for Talarico, who is currently locked in a tight midterm battle against the Republican nominee, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The public alliance between the two Texans is not entirely new. Earlier this year, Talarico made an appearance on stage with Nelson during the musician’s annual 4th of July Picnic in Austin, signaling a growing relationship between the progressive lawmaker and the progressive-leaning country superstar.

Nelson’s endorsement of Talarico is part of a broader push by the music legend to support Texas Democrats in the upcoming November election. Along with the Senate nod, Nelson recently released video endorsements for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa and lieutenant governor candidate Vikki Godwin.

As the midterm election approaches, political analysts state that endorsements from culturally significant figures like Nelson are aimed at boosting voter turnout in a state where statewide races remain fiercely contested.
