Golfing legend Tiger Woods had his driver’s license suspended for five years today after finalizing a plea agreement stemming from his high-speed rollover crash in March.
Appearing before a Florida judge, the 50-year-old sports icon pleaded guilty to charges of reckless driving and refusing to submit to a lawful chemical test. The deal allows Woods to avoid jail time, provided he strictly adheres to the terms of his five-year suspension.
Zero Tolerance from the Bench
The judge ordered concurrent five-year suspensions for both counts, making it explicitly clear that the court will show no leniency.
Unlike standard probationary suspensions, Woods was denied any hardship or restricted license privileges.
“If you get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle for any reason during the next five years, you will go to jail,” the judge warned during the sentencing.
Details of the Rollover Crash
The legal saga began on the morning of March 27, 2026, on Jupiter Island. According to police reports, Woods was traveling at high speeds in a 30 mph zone when his Land Rover clipped a pickup truck. The impact sent his vehicle careening off the road, where it flipped onto its side. Woods had to be extricated from the wreckage.
While a breathalyzer test at the scene registered a 0.00% blood-alcohol content, responding officers noted that Woods was highly lethargic and failed a field sobriety test. He subsequently refused a mandatory urine screening.
A police search later allegedly revealed two hydrocodone pills in Woods’ pocket. The golfer reportedly admitted to officers that he had taken prescription medication earlier that morning.
Stepping Away for Recovery
Following the incident, Woods announced an indefinite hiatus from professional golf. He immediately checked into an inpatient treatment facility to address substance abuse and medication management.
Representatives for Woods stated that he remains fully committed to his long-term recovery and plans to comply with all court-mandered restrictions.
