30 Years After Rap Superstar Tupac Shakur Was Murdered In Las Vegas–A Guilty Verdict: Duane Davis Faces Life Sentence

A Clark County jury has found former street gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder for his role in the September 7, 1996, drive-by shooting that killed hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur.

The historic verdict, delivered today after less than three hours of deliberation, closes the book on a three-decade investigation. It marks the first and only criminal conviction in one of the music industry’s most notorious unsolved mysteries.

Davis, 63, sat stoically as the court clerk read the verdict. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Retaliation in the Desert

Prosecutors successfully argued that Davis acted as the “shot caller” for a South Side Compton Crips faction. They painted him as the mastermind who orchestrated the deadly ambush on the Las Vegas Strip.

The state argued the killing was act of swift street retaliation. It occurred just two hours after Shakur and Death Row Records CEO Marion “Suge” Knight assaulted Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson, in the lobby of the MGM Grand hotel.

Under Nevada accountability laws, prosecutors did not need to prove Davis pulled the trigger. They only needed to prove he aided, abetted, or encouraged the execution of the crime.

Defeated by His Own Words

The prosecution’s case rested almost entirely on Davis’s own extensive admissions. Over the last decade, Davis detailed his involvement in a 2019 memoir and numerous media interviews.

In those accounts, Davis admitted to acquiring the .40-caliber handgun used in the murder. He also confessed to riding in the front seat of the white Cadillac that pulled up alongside Shakur’s BMW.

“He wrote the script for his own conviction,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo told the jury during closing arguments.

Defense attorney Michael Sanft countered that Davis’s stories were complete fabrications. He argued his client told tall tales to secure entertainment deals and financial profit, emphasizing that the state lacked any physical evidence or DNA tying Davis to the scene. The jury ultimately rejected that defense.

Tears and Relief in the Courtroom

Members of the Shakur family wept silently in the gallery as the word “guilty” echoed through the courtroom.

Davis raised a fist toward his defense team as marshals led him out of the courtroom in handcuffs. His attorneys confirmed they intend to file an immediate appeal. A formal sentencing date will be scheduled in the coming days.

Tupac was just 25 years old when he died from his injuries.
