Plan To Rename Nashville Airport After Late Country Superstar Dolly Parton: Petition To Support Name Change Draws Hundreds Of Thousands Of Signatures

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and airport officials announced a historic plan to rename Nashville International Airport after Country music icon and philanthropist Dolly Parton, following her passing this week at age 80.

“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Lee said in a statement. “At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter.”

The decision aligns with a massive grassroots fan petition that has thus far gained over 158,000 signatures.

Board to Review Policy Next Month

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) board will formally review the proposal during its next scheduled meeting on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

The board must address an existing policy that requires an individual to be deceased for two years before a facility can bear their name. However, officials confirm the board has the legal authority to waive this rule.

City Coordination

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell stated the city is collaborating directly with Parton’s family and foundation. The partnership aims to ensure the tribute matches her lifelong values.

State lawmakers also plan to introduce supporting legislation this November to solidify the name change if necessary.
