Actor Samuel Monroe, Jr.–Known For Roles In “Menace II Society” And “Tales From The Hood” Dies At 52: He Had Battled, Meningitis, Pneumonia

Samuel Monroe Jr., the veteran actor best known for his memorable breakout role in the 1993 urban drama Menace II Society, has died at the age of 52.

His mother, Joyce Patton, confirmed the news via social media, stating that Monroe passed away on Wednesday evening, August 26, 2026, following a months-long hospitalization.

Monroe had been hospitalized in Los Angeles since April 2026. His family previously shared updates on his medical condition, noting that his health declined rapidly after he contracted a severe case of meningitis.

The illness eventually escalated into severe MRSA pneumonia, leading to brain swelling and frequent seizures. Monroe underwent three separate brain surgeries and was placed on life support during his final months.

Legacy in 90s Black Cinema

Monroe became a recognizable face in 1990s Hollywood after making his feature film debut as Ilena’s cousin in the Hughes brothers’ classic Menace II Society. His performance opened doors to a string of roles in several iconic cult classics including Menace II Society (1993); Tales from the Hood (1995); Don’t Be a Menace… (1996); Set It Off (1996); The Players Club (1998) and other films.

Monroe also made appearances on television, securing guest spots on acclaimed series such as NYPD Blue, Murder One, Smart Guy, and Southland. In 2000, he briefly pivoted to music with the release of his rap album, Things in the Game Done Changed.

Funeral arrangements and public memorial details have not yet been released by the family.

Family Faces Off Over Finances

But while the accomplished actor’s passing marks the end of his life and film career, the battle being waged between his mother and the mother of two of his three children appears to be just getting started.

The Mother’s Stance: Monroe, Jr.’s mother, Joyce Patton, recently filed for a conservatorship, publicly questioning the legitimacy of Monroe’s marriage to Shawna Stewart. Patton claimed the couple had not lived together in over 15 years and that Monroe had lived with her for the last four years. She also accused Stewart of improperly holding GoFundMe donations meant for his medical bills while also collecting his film residuals.

The Wife’s Stance: Shawna Stewart, who has been publicly referred to as Monroe, Jr.’s wife, has fiercely denied the allegations, maintaining she holds legal power of attorney. She stated that Monroe explicitly wanted her—not his mother—in charge of his health and money. Stewart countered that Patton’s legal bid was purely financially motivated, denied touching any of Monroe’s money, and stated they shared children and continued an on-and-off living arrangement.

But when asked by TMZ to provide proof of their marriage, Stewart allegedly declined to provide documentation but instead said Patton “is in for a surprise.”

Because the conservatorship petition was filed right before Monroe’s passing, the dispute is expected to transition into a battle over his estate and assets in probate court.
