Neighborhood Dollar General Unexpectedly Shuts Down

An area Dollar General permanently closed several weeks ago, dealing a blow to neighborhood grocery options.

The Dollar General at 2975 Headland Drive next to the Discount Mall is no longer in business. The store closure came as a surprise especially considering Dollar General reportedly agreed to extend its lease agreement with mall ownership late last year.

While it has been speculated that changes in Mall ownership may have influenced Dollar General’s decision to leave, that has not been confirmed, and an email seeking clarification received no response.

No Georgia Dollar General location was slated for closure as recently as January, when the company announced 96 stores would be closed as part of its pre-planned “thorough evaluation of the company’s store footprint”, according to the retailer.

Dollar General’s departure has reduced the options local grocery and convenience shoppers have in the East Point and Atlanta areas neighboring Greenbriar. While Dollar General is not considered a full grocery store, many shoppers who do not have vehicles or live nearby shopped there for certain convenience products.
