How Blue Is East Point? One Of Georgia’s Biggest Democratic-Leaning Cities, East Point Ranks More Progressive Than 59 Of Its 63 Closest Metro Atlanta Neighbors

While Georgia remains a razor-thin political battleground on the national stage, the city of East Point continues to solidify its reputation as an unshakeable progressive stronghold, outstripping the state’s Democratic baseline by astronomical margins.

According to research, Democrats vastly outnumber Republicans within East Point’s city limits.

Political leanings vary according to neighborhood within East Point. The northwest side (Headland Forest, Conley Hills, Meadow Lark Estates, etc.) is the most Democratic-leaning (D+84) and the southeast side (Semmes Park, Frog Hollow, East Washington, etc.) is the least Democratic-leaning (D+70), a spread of about 14 points.

The map below paints a picture of a solidly blue city situated in a surrounding sea of blue with very little electoral wiggle room for Republicans for miles around.

A Tale of Two Blue Sides

An analysis of the city’s internal political geography reveals that even its most conservative pockets are monolithically progressive: The city’s partisan lean ranges from deep blue to nearly unanimously Democratic.

“East Point has always had a Republican presence”, said a local MAGA conservative who lives in Jefferson Park, located in the city’s Ward B. “But not enough to win an election. And honestly, if you’re conservative, you’re better off keeping it in the closet”, if you run for office in East Point, he added, where the letter R generates limited electoral love in East Point come election time.

Approximately 56% of all adult residents in East Point are registered, active Democrats.

Conversely, the Republican voting baseline across the entire city hovers at a mere 6%.

This data has been compiled by neighborhood political mapping platform Bestneighborhood, which shows that East Point operates at roughly 82 percentage points more Democratic than the state of Georgia as a whole.

By comparison, according to the site, nearby College Park is D+79, Hapeville is D+47, Riverdale is D+77 and Atlanta is D+19.

Furthermore, out of 63 neighboring municipalities within a 25-mile radius of the Atlanta metro area, East Point leans more progressive than 59 of them.

So What Makes East Point So Democratic?

“Dense areas vote Democratic. About 91% of residents in East Point live in densely developed areas, about 55 points above the U.S. average of 36%”, reports Bestneighborhood.org.

“A high never-married share predicts Democratic voting, and about 54% of adults in East Point have never been married, in the top fraction of cities. East Point runs against the grain of Georgia, a Democratic-leaning outlier in a roughly evenly split state”.

Demographic and Municipal Drivers

There is also the city’s demographic picture, as its political identity is deeply intertwined with its demographics and urban infrastructure.

According to information dated from July 2025 via the U.S. Census Bureau, East Point is home to roughly 38,000 residents, featuring a 75.7% Black or African American population, a White (alone) population of 12.2%, and a growing 11.7% Hispanic or Latino population (of any race).

Black voters across metro Atlanta traditionally represent the most reliable and decisive coalition for the Democratic Party. Furthermore, the city’s dense urban footprint and direct connection to the MARTA transit system align perfectly with typical high-margin progressive territory.

This political alignment directly impacts countywide races. In major cycles, East Point acts as an essential voter engine to offset the more conservative, affluent northern suburbs of Fulton County (such as Milton and Alpharetta).

East Point’s overwhelming left-leaning margins have heavily assisted high-profile Fulton county Democrats, such as District Attorney Fani Willis, and Sheriff Patrick Labat, in securing countywide victories.

Interesting Fact: 1984 was the last year that East Point voted for a Republican presidential candidate, Ronald Reagan.

Republican Fletcher Thompson was the last U.S. Congressman to live in the area. Thompson also operated a law firm and aviation insurance practice in East Point for years.

Notably, Thompson was the only Southern congressman to attend the funeral of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr..

The Turnout Challenge

Despite the city’s overwhelming Democratic lean, local organizers note a distinct gap between federal and municipal voter participation.

While high-stakes presidential cycles draw a healthy percentage of voters, local elections often face a significant dropoff. Activists hope they can increase East Point’s often low turnout percentage in the 2026 midterm elections, in which early voting is just days away.
