The Georgia Bulldogs Step It Up In Second Half, Trounce Vanderbilt 38-14: UGA Is Now 5-0 Overall, 3-0 In SEC Play

For thirty minutes on Saturday afternoon, the Vanderbilt Commodores threatened to author a monumental shocker between the hedges. But championships are won in the second half, and the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs proved exactly why they belong in the national title conversation, tightening the defensive screws to pull away for a definitive 38-14 victory at Sanford Stadium.

With the win, Georgia preserves its perfect record, improving to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in SEC play, while Vanderbilt falls to 3-2 (0-2 SEC).

First-Half Turbulence

The afternoon did not begin quite as smoothly as the Athens faithful had hoped. Playing without their starting signal-caller, the underdog Commodores turned to backup quarterback Blaze Berlowitz, who momentarily caught the Bulldogs’ defense off guard.

In the first quarter, Berlowitz unleashed a stunning 60-yard touchdown bomb to Junior Sherrill, who burned past the secondary to give Vanderbilt an early spark. Sherrill proved to be a handful all afternoon, racking up 107 receiving yards and keeping the commodores within striking distance. When the halftime whistle blew, Georgia held a slim 21-14 lead, leaving the home crowd restless.

Stockton Steals the Show

Any anxiety lingering in the stadium was quickly erased in the third quarter, thanks to a masterful performance by Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton.

Stockton was the model of efficiency, dissecting the Vanderbilt secondary by completing 25 of 32 pass attempts for 295 yards and three touchdowns. Whether finding targets moving the chains on third down or hitting receivers in stride in the red zone, Stockton commanded the offense with veteran poise.

As Stockton wore down the air defense, the ground game broke it wide open. Running back Bo Walker provided the late-game lightning, slicing through the trenches for 71 rushing yards on a mere five carries.

Defensive Lockdown

While the offense clicked into gear, it was Kirby Smart’s defense that truly slammed the door. Adjusting at the break, the Bulldogs completely neutralized Berlowitz and the Vanderbilt rushing attack, pitching a textbook second-half shutout.

Georgia scored 17 unanswered points in the final two frames, capping off the dominant defensive display when defensive back Ellis Robinson IV intercepted a desperate Berlowitz pass late in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice.

Looking Ahead

While Coach Smart will undoubtedly find teaching moments from the first-half lapses, the Bulldogs have little time to look backward. A monstrous test loomed on the horizon: a highly anticipated, high-stakes road showdown against the Alabama Crimson Tide next Saturday, October 10.
