A multi-agency manhunt culminated over the weekend with the arrest of a suspect wanted in connection with the tragic 2024 slaying of an Atlanta doctoral student.
Julian Taylor Morris, 33, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Miami on September 14, 2026, ending an intensive search following the July 2024 death of his former boyfriend, Deundray Cottrell.

Morris is currently being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County. He faces a charge of murder and is awaiting extradition to Birmingham, Alabama, where the crime took place.
A Holiday Disappearance
The case began on Independence Day in 2024, when Cottrell, a 31-year-old marketing Ph.D. candidate and well-known Atlanta dancer, traveled to Birmingham to visit family. According to investigators, Cottrell went inside his sister’s residence to check on his dog, who was startled by holiday fireworks. He was never seen alive again.
In the initial hours of the investigation, Morris allegedly told family members that Cottrell had jumped from a window or balcony and fled the property. However, local home surveillance footage painted a starkly different picture, capturing Cottrell sprinting through neighborhood yards alone, visibly distressed and running for his life.

Grim Discovery in Birmingham
Following an intense community search, Birmingham Police supervisors discovered Cottrell’s body on July 6, 2024. His remains were hidden amid rubble inside an abandoned backyard shed, just one block away from where he was last seen.

An autopsy later confirmed that Cottrell died of strangulation, with an electrical cord recovered at the scene.
Morris Retains Legal Counsel
In the immediate aftermath of Cottrell’s disappearance over the Fourth of July weekend in 2024, Morris briefly spoke with the Birmingham Police Department. However, before Cottrell’s body was discovered hidden inside an abandoned shed, Morris vanished from the area.
Within days of the murder, Morris retained attorney Victor Revill of the Revill Law Firm. On July 10, 2024, his legal counsel released a public statement asserting that Morris was a “college-educated veteran” and a former Marine who “loved Deundray Cottrell and [was] currently grieving the death of his loved one.”
Under the strict advice of his defense team, Morris invoked his rights, refused to provide any further statements to detectives, and completely severed communication with Birmingham investigators. This legal shield left authorities at a standstill for over 24 months as they quietly built a case.
Living in the Open

Despite being publicly labeled a prime “person of interest” by law enforcement, Morris did not go into hiding in the traditional sense.
He at some point reportedly returned to Georgia and continued his work as an Atlanta-based entertainer, digital creator, and event host.
To the agony of Cottrell’s grieving family, Morris frequently posted updates on social media, traveled freely across state lines, and ultimately booked the luxury Florida cruise that led to his downfall.
“I can’t tell you the way I have screamed, the way we all have screamed,” Cottrell’s sister, Angelica Harris, told reporters after learning that Morris had finally been intercepted at the Miami port. “It has all paid off. I know it’s just started, but that part of the race is over.”

Morris remains held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center while prosecutors finalize his extradition back to Alabama to stand trial for murder.

Morris’ Attorney Issues Statement
Morris’s Birmingham attorney, Victor Revill, provided this statement to Burmingham News media following his client’s arrest:
“Over 2 years have passed since the tragic death of Deundray Cottrell, but the evidence has not changed and Mr. Julian Morris is still innocent. Just because a person is charged with a crime does not mean they are guilty of that crime. Whereas Cottrell’s family are stating that Mr. Cottrell was the last person seen with Mr. Morris, the evidence clearly paints a different picture.”
“In fact, Ring surveillance video showed Cottrell running through yards and hopping a fence by himself on the night he went missing. At that time, Mr. Morris was with Cottrell’s family at their home. Mr. Morris cannot be in two places at the same time. It’s a physical impossibility. The truth is that we just do not know who caused the death of Mr. Cottrell and we may never know. We are disappointed that Mr. Morris has been charged with this crime, but we look forward to putting forward a vigorous defense and bringing the truth to light.”
