The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating a fatal, targeted ambush that claimed the life of Warm Springs Police Department Sergeant Chris Fisher. State and local authorities are focusing heavily on a recent, violent arrest as the highly probable motive behind the targeted execution.

The suspected gunman, 23-year-old Jimmy Lee Steverson, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday afternoon after a multi-state manhunt culminated in a high-risk traffic stop in South Carolina.

The Shooting and the Timeline

According to GBI investigators, Sgt. Fisher, 36, had just finished an unrelated traffic stop at 11:57 p.m. on Tuesday night. He was completing paperwork inside his parked patrol cruiser at the Meriwether Country Inn when a black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado pulled directly alongside him. An occupant inside the truck immediately opened fire, striking Fisher multiple times before speeding away. Fisher was pronounced dead at the scene.

The killing triggered an immediate, statewide Blue Alert as multiple law enforcement agencies launched an intense search for Steverson.

Investigation Into the Motive

While state officials note that the investigation remains active, newly obtained court records provide a clear and chilling motive for the ambush. Sgt. Fisher was the specific arresting officer who took Steverson into custody just days earlier, on August 28, following an encounter that turned violent.

According to arrest warrants signed by Sgt. Fisher:

The Initial Confrontation: Steverson allegedly swung a closed fist at Fisher, striking the officer on the left side of his face while resisting arrest.

The Charges: Fisher arrested Steverson on felony charges, including willful obstruction of law enforcement, felony possession of marijuana (34.6 grams), and possession of an AR-style rifle during the commission of a crime.

The Release: Steverson was booked into jail but managed to secure his freedom on August 28 after posting a $10,000 bond.
