Atlanta police have said the person killed in Thursday’s early morning hours was a pedestrian who was hit while in the far-right northbound lane near the Williams Street bridge, just north of North Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man was not publicly identified but was said to be about 33 years old.
The resulting investigation snarled traffic along the busy Downtown Connector for hours, with red brake lights being even for miles.
Traffic began to clear around 8 A.M.
A Deadly August For Pedestrians
In just the month of August, several pedestrians or stranded motorists have been killed near I-75:
On August 23, 2026: A 23-year-old woman, Jaquelin Telesforo Vazquez, died early Sunday morning after being hit by a car while standing near her disabled vehicle on Interstate 75 northbound in Atlanta.
Also on August 23, 2026: A man was hit and killed by multiple vehicles on the northbound lanes of I-75/I-85 near University Avenue.
August 12, 2026: A 34-year-old man, Akil Lateef Mayer, was struck and killed by multiple vehicles after attempting to cross I-75 near Howell Mill Road.
Law enforcement officials have advised stranded motorists to avoid standing near traveling motor vehicles in case of an emergency or mechanical breakdown.
