Rap Superstar Lil Durk’s Federal Murder For Hire Trial Starts In Los Angeles: Who Is Lil Durk, And Why Is He Charged With Murder?

Federal prosecutors painted a portrait of corporate-style street violence on Monday, accusing Grammy-winning rapper Lil Durk of funding a $1 million bounty to “stalk, hunt, and kill” a rival artist in a deadly cross-country revenge plot.

Opening statements began yesterday in the federal trial of the 33-year-old Chicago rap star, whose legal name is Durk Banks. Banks faces multiple severe federal charges, including conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, interstate stalking, and use of a firearm resulting in death. If convicted, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in federal prison.

The prosecution alleges that Banks orchestrated the hit in retaliation for the November 2020 killing of his close friend and protégé, rapper King Von. The target of the alleged bounty was Savannah-born rapper Quando Rondo, legally known as Tyquian Bowman, according to prosecutors.

The government’s case argues that the deadly feud culminated in an August 2022 ambush at a West Hollywood gas station. While Bowman escaped the hail of gunfire unharmed, his 24-year-old cousin, Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, was fatally shot.

“This was not a random act of violence,” a prosecutor told the jury, arguing that Banks used his Only The Family (OTF) collective as a personal hit squad, funding flights, rental cars, and hotels for the shooters. The government’s case is expected to heavily feature testimonies from three former co-defendants who have flipped and agreed to testify against the rap star.

The defense, however, aggressively pushed back, framing the Hip-Hop icon as a scapegoat who had no knowledge of the violent plot.

Banks’ defense attorney argued that the logistics of the hit were entirely handled by Banks’ former personal assistant, Kavon Grant, without the rapper’s consent or awareness. The defense urged jurors to separate Banks’ gritty rap lyrics and public persona from the reality of the evidence, maintaining that the rapper is entirely innocent of the conspiracy.

The high-stakes trial drew intense public interest, with Banks’ family and high-profile supporters, including musician Machine Gun Kelly, spotted entering the Los Angeles federal courthouse to show solidarity.

Jury selection concluded last week, and the trial is expected to last several weeks as prosecutors present rap lyrics, financial records, and co-conspirator testimonies to the jury.

Banks remains in federal custody. Arrested by U.S. Marshals in October 2024 near Miami, Florida, prosecutors alleged he was attempting to flee the country and a judge subsequently denied bail.

Robinson was traveling in an SUV with Quando Rondo and Rondo’s sister when gunmen ambushed their vehicle while they were stopping for gas at a station near the Beverly Center in Los Angeles.

Federal prosecutors claim that Quando Rondo (Tyquian Bowman) was the actual intended target of the alleged $1 million bounty. Bowman and his sister managed to escape the ambush completely unharmed, but Robinson was fatally wounded in the crossfire and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

What Happens Next

Durk has strongly denied any involvement in Robinson’s murder and has maintained his innocence. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.

The prosecution is expected to rely on at least one witness who took a plea deal in the case but Durk’s attorneys have argued that prosecution witnesses in the case against Durk are implicating the rapper in an effort to receive lighter sentences in a crime the rapper is not guilty of.

If convicted on the most serious charges, Lil Durk faces life in federal prison.
