East Point Police And The Fulton County Medical Examiner Continue To Investigate After Human Skull Found On Janice Drive This Week

East Point detectives and forensic teams are continuing their investigation after a human skull was discovered in a wooded area behind an East Point neighborhood earlier this week.

According to official police statements, the grim discovery was made on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 6, in the 4000 block of Janice Drive. A local homeowner contacted authorities after his dogs alerted him to the skeletal remains located just past his property’s tree line.

“Detectives, along with the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, recovered the skull and are currently working to identify the remains,” an East Point Police Department spokesperson confirmed in an official statement.

On Tuesday morning, Aug. 11, the investigation intensified as East Point police returned to the scene. Investigators partnered with the Georgia Emergency Search and Rescue team to conduct a meticulous grid search of the dense brush.

Specially trained cadaver dogs were deployed to scour the area for clues. However, authorities confirmed that the search did not yield immediate results.

“No additional skeletal remains were located,” police said following the operation.

During the sweep, search teams did note the presence of several older, unmarked graves nearby. Local historians later clarified that these plots belong to a distinct, private historic cemetery in the area and are not believed to be connected to the newly discovered skull.

The identity, biological sex, and age of the deceased remain unknown. The skull is currently in the custody of the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, where forensic pathologists are working to extract DNA and compile a biological profile.

Authorities plan to compare the findings against regional missing persons databases in hopes of a match. No information regarding a potential cause of death or suspected foul play has been released.

East Point Police are urging anyone with information about the area or recent suspicious activity near Janice Drive to contact their criminal investigations division.
