City Says Water Repairs Nearly Complete: Many Residents Report Water Service Returning; Boil Water Advisory Still In Effect

After a days-long ordeal in which many hundreds of East Point residents were left with no or very little safe drinking water, the City says it is now close to a resolution and that water service should be restored to the community soon.

Following a water main incident and infrastructure repair that closed roads and interrupted water supply for countless residents, many locals took to social media to express their alarm. What made the crisis worse for many has been what many perceive to be inadequate communication with residents by the City as the time frame for repairs expanded, prolonging water access for many.

To help make the ordeal more bearable, residents across the city have pitched in to offer free water to neighbors and the City also offered complimentary bottles of water at city hall.

The city’s current water imbroglio comes as the current budget has been the focus of community debate and media attention. Several councilmembers, including Tremayne Mitchell (Ward C), Starr Cummings (Ward C At-Large), Andrea Caldwell (Ward D-At Large) and Latonya Martin-Rogers (Ward D) have advocated for a budget that addresses the needs of struggling seniors within the city.

About a quarter of the city’s residents are aged 60 and older.

Fortunately, the city announced on Facebook that repair crews are nearing the finalization of their effort and that water service should be completely restored soon.

Some residents, without water for 24 hours or longer, were already sharing on social media that they are now able to acesss water in their homes–a welcome sight for the many who were not able to cook or drink as water service continued to be unavailable to them.

But the City and environmental health professionals caution residents to boil drinking water for 24 hours after service has been restored.

“Our crews continue working to repair the damaged water main.

During the repair process, an additional piece of equipment was discovered to be damaged, creating a more complex repair than originally anticipated. The water spillage has been contained and addressed, according to crews on scene.

While there is still work to be completed, we believe we are getting closer to resolving the situation. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

The Boil Water Advisory remains in effect and will continue until all required water quality testing has been completed and the water is confirmed safe for consumption. We will notify residents immediately when the advisory is lifted.
